A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Maurice L. “Bud” Mapes who served with excellence as a lobbyist for fifty years.
WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana learned of the death of Maurice L. “Bud” Mapes on Thursday, December 1, 2005, at the age of seventy-five; and
WHEREAS, a native of Ozark, Missouri, and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Bud Mapes was born the son of Reginald Maurice Mapes and Mabel Helen Woody Mapes on July 8, 1930; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mapes attended public school in Ozark; Drury College and Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Missouri; the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri; and Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity; and
WHEREAS, during the Korean War, Mr. Mapes volunteered to serve in the United States Air Force and did so with great valor from January 1951 until March of 1955, then moved to Baton Rouge in 1960; and
WHEREAS, for fifty years, Mr. Mapes served with honor and distinction as a lobbyist, and some of his clients included Louisiana Farm Bureau, Southwestern Lumberman’s Association, Louisiana Finance Association, 3M Company, Entergy, Cole-National Corp., Louisiana Retailers Association, Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association, and Louisiana Building Material Dealers Association; and
WHEREAS, during his distinguished tenure as a lobbyist, Mr. Mapes worked with eight Louisiana governors, beginning with Earl Long and ending with Kathleen Babineaux Blanco; Mr. Mapes, who never retired, always practiced the motto, “What is the right thing to do?”; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mapes was preceded in death by his wife, Bea Mapes, and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy and Shannon Mapes and Joe and Sandy Mapes; his sister, Sandra Crawford; his brother, Tom Mapes; his grandchildren, Jeremy Mapes, Zachary Mapes, Christy Carmouche, Brittany Morvant, London Thornton, and Bilee Yelverton; and six great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, with the death of Bud Mapes, Louisiana has lost one of her finest citizens, a true gentleman who left an indelible mark on the lives of those he touched; and
WHEREAS, although his death has left a tremendous void in the legislature and in his community, Mr. Mapes’ memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of the many citizens who knew and loved him.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Maurice L. “Bud” Mapes, does hereby recognize and record for posterity his outstanding achievements and singular contributions to the legislative process as an admired and trusted lobbyist for a half-century, and does hereby extend true appreciation for his enduring legacy of honesty and modesty that will forever continue to be a source of deep pride and honor for his family as well as for all of the friends he made at the Louisiana State Capitol during five decades of dedicated and highly effective service to the many clients fortunate enough to be represented by an individual of such talent, intelligence, and integrity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the family of Bud Mapes.
